SORA in Practice: Conducting an Authorised UAS Operation (1186EN)
Description
At the end of this training, the learner will be able to:
- Verify the implementation of a SORA assessment into concrete operational requirements (OSOs, mitigations, safety barriers).
- Verify the establishment of a controlled ground area and ground-risk buffer as defined by SORA.
- Conduct pre-site surveys to identify hazards relevant to drone operations in a controlled flight area (terrain, population density, obstacles, airspace constraints).
- Verify UAS parameters relevant to SORA mitigations: geofencing altitude ceilings, flight envelope limits, emergency georoutes and termination points.
- Perform practical tests of safety measures: containment checks, emergency response actions, verification of safety equipment (parachute tests, remote ID, tether checks)
- Supervise the execution of flight operations under SORA constraints while documenting compliance.
Case study: converting a sample SORA into operational checklists.
- On-site hazard identification walk (mapping of obstacles, take-off/landing zones, overflight restrictions).
- Ground-risk mitigation setup: perimeter marking, buffer estimation, emergency areas.
- Drone configuration for containment/ceiling limits.
- Emergency mitigation drills (flight termination exercise in controlled environment, parachute system demonstration if available).
- Operational documentation preparation: risk controls log, pre-operation briefing, post-operation report.
Case-based learning: Transformation of a sample SORA into practical operational checklists.
- Field observation: On-site identification and mapping of hazards, obstacles, and operational constraints.
- Hands-on setup: Implementation of ground-risk mitigations, buffers, and emergency areas.
- Technical configuration: Practical adjustment of drone containment and ceiling limits.
- Controlled drills: Execution of emergency and flight-termination procedures, including parachute demonstrations where applicable.
- Prior attendance of the course “Overview of UAS Specific Operations Risk Assessment (SORA) Methodology [UAS-SAF]“ at EUROCONTROL is required.
- Please note that this is a 6hr course (9.30am - 4.30pm) course collaboration with EUROCONTROL Aviation Learning Center (Kirchberg).
Service providers learning SORA traffic interaction; authorities evaluating SORA applications; UAS industry personnel, remote pilots, instructors, and aviation professionals.
This is a learning pathway is developed jointly by EUROCONTROL and the CNFPC. It combines an advanced regulatory and risk assessment course with a practical, field-based implementation course, providing participants with a structured, end-to-end understanding of UAS operations in the Specific category. Together, the two courses ensure full continuity, from risk assessment and regulatory approval through to the safe and compliant execution of UAS operations in the field. Consequently, participants are required to complete the Overview of UAS Specific Operations Risk Assessment (SORA) Methodology [UAS-SAF] course as scheduled from 10 to 12 November 2026 (3 days) at EUROCONTROL prior to attending the practical implementation course.
Training location:
