Depaving and greening of built-up areas according to the principles of nature in the city (1267FR)

Depaving and greening of built-up areas according to the principles of nature in the city

Description

Understand the principles of sustainable stormwater management and depaving strategies, as well as their role in preventing erosion in urban environments.

Identify the ecological functions of soils in cities and assess concrete solutions such as the reuse of excavated soil, the regeneration of urban soils, and urban agriculture practices, including urban gardening, farming and forestry.

Analyse the effects of climate change on urban soils, in particular the urban heat island phenomenon, and discover suitable mitigation strategies.

Master the key concepts related to polluted soils, including their identification, the Luxembourgish and European regulatory framework, sustainable remediation methods, and innovative nature-based approaches.

Training on request:

michel.wilwert@cnfpc.lu

1. Stormwater management, depaving concepts and erosion control Learn what polluted soil is, the difference between point-source pollution and diffuse pollution, how contamination thresholds are defined by legislation, and in which cases they must be applied according to land use — agricultural, residential or industrial.

What is the cost of polluted soil? The case of Luxembourg is used as an example to illustrate the economic considerations related to contaminated sites.

2. Biodiversity and ecological functions of urban soils, with applied examples

Reuse of excavated soil Regeneration of urban soils and fertile soils Urban gardening, urban farming and urban forestry

3. Climate change: urban heat islands and their mitigation

4. Sustainable management of polluted soils, including the national and European regulatory framework

Understanding polluted soils Learn what polluted soil is, the difference between point-source pollution and diffuse pollution, how contamination thresholds are defined by legislation, and in which cases they must be applied according to land use — agricultural, residential or industrial. What is the cost of polluted soil? The case of Luxembourg is used as an example to illustrate the economic considerations related to contaminated sites. European regulations and policies Overview of European regulations and policies, such as the Green Deal and the Soil Mission, as well as related proposals in Luxembourg. Sustainable management strategies Explore the options available when soil is classified as polluted and gain an overview of different remediation technologies, ranging from conventional methods to innovative approaches. Understand their characteristics and compare them in general terms according to time, cost and sustainability. Overview of soil remediation technologies Discover a variety of remediation techniques, ranging from conventional methods to more innovative approaches. Nature-based and ecological soil remediation solutions Discover practical examples of cost-effective remediation strategies, with a particular focus on nature-based solutions aligned with sustainability and restoration objectives, as well as European projects coordinated by LIST on this topic. 5.
